The apparent tension between hotness (hierarchy) and equality (collectivism) came about only when gay culture was defined by the academy. Seduction became suspect at a time when pleasure led to death for so many of us. In actuality, the attempt to create a thriving gay culture was and remains the development of a sensibility where these two things not only coexist but buttress one another. They are of a piece, and thinking they are in tension arises only in a colonized mind.
